US Embassy in London refuses to meet Dunn family

Harry Dunns (R) death at the hands of former CIA officer Anne Sacoolas (L) has complicated UK-US diplomatic relations

Only a day after Harry Dunns twin brother, Niall, wrote to Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, urging him to personally intervene to deliver justice for his brother, the US Embassy in London has seen fit to deliver yet another snub to the long-suffering Dunn family.

The snub came after the Dunn family and their local MP, Andrea Leadsom, contacted the US Embassy in London to discuss recent road incidents involving US staff based at RAF Croughton, the same place where Harry was killed last August.

But the State Department has flatly rejected a meeting on the dubious grounds that the Dunn family intends to sue the US government.

In a letter addressed to Leadsom, who is Conservative MP for the South Northamptonshire constituency, Yael Lempert, the deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in London, outright rejects a meeting with the Dunn family.

"Regrettably, at this time we are unable to meet with the Dunn family directly or discuss specifics of the case surrounding their sons tragic death", Lempert wrote to Leadsom.

Harry Dunn was only 19 when his motorcycle was hit by a car driven by Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a serving US spy based at RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire.

It later transpired that Sacoolas herself is a former officer in the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It was also revealed that she had a poor driving record in her home country of America where she was fined for driving without due care and attention in 2006.

Following Harrys killing, Sacoolas immediately claimed diplomatic immunity and fled the UK. It was later revealed that Britains Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) had facilitated her escape.

In December 2019 Britains Crown Prosecution Service formally charged Sacoolas with causing death by dangerous driving but it is widely believed that the US government will never agree to her extradition to the UK to face justice.

The crime of causing death by dangerous driving can attract a prison sentence of up to 14 years.

The tragic story of young Harry has caused intense controversy in the UK for it has exposed how the British government is willing to place its so-called "special relationship" with the US above the welfare and safety of its citizens.
